Since 1939

A part of our history

It all began in Zapotlán el Grande, a small town in Jalisco, Mexico. Carlos Ríos and his wife, Baudelia Martínez, were driven by necessity to start a business that could sustain their family. From their own kitchen, they began crafting chocolate by hand and selling it door to door.

In time, they named their venture El Cometa. The chocolates of El Cometa quickly won the hearts of the region, but one recipe rose above the rest: the bold, stone-ground chocolate known as Rey Amargo (“The Bitter King”). Its unmistakable character made it the crown jewel of their creations.

By 1969, its legacy was undeniable. The company embraced its true identity and took the name the world now knows: Chocolate Rey Amargo.

Zapotlán El Grande

Nestled in the picturesque southern region of Jalisco, Mexico, Zapotlán El Grande, better known today as Ciudad Guzmán, brims with natural splendor and cultural richness. Enveloped by towering mountains, this tranquil valley town boasts a breathtaking geographical allure unlike anywhere else.

Dominating the skyline is “El Nevado,” an awe-inspiring dormant volcano. Its majestic silhouette, often draped in pristine winter snow, provides a photographer’s dreamscape and a haven for nature lovers.

Yet, the geological wonders continue. Just beyond El Nevado’s serene presence stands “El Colima” volcano, proudly active and periodically sending plumes of smoke into the air. These dramatic fumaroles offer a year-round spectacle, reminding all who visit of the remarkable, ever-present force of nature.

Our Promise

For more than 80 years, Rey Amargo has crafted chocolate the way it should be: pure, honest, and timeless. Just three ingredients define our main recipe: premium Mexican cacao, the natural sweetness of brown sugar, and the warm touch of cinnamon.

No flavorings. No preservatives. No artificial colors. Only the authentic essence of true chocolate, made as it has been for generations.

This is Rey Amargo, Mexico’s standard of excellence in chocolate. Because you deserve nothing less than the real thing.
